Water Wise
Converving our most needed resource
Our Goal
Our goal is to conserve as much water as possible through as many means as possible. Water covers about 71% of the Earth's surface and 97% of all water is found in our oceans. 3% of Earth's water is fresh and 2.5% is unavailable because it is locked up in glaciers, polar ice caps, or the atmosphere leaving 0.5% of the Earth's water supply for human consumption and agriculture. This amounts to an average of 2.2 million gallons of fresh water for each person on Earth. The average Colorado home requires about 150,000 gallons of water to effectively maintain the needs of the occupants and landscape and actually wastes up to 25,000 gallons per year! Faucet leakage can also account a loss of up to an additional 5,000 gallons per year. Globally, 1 in 5 people lack access to clean water. Not only are we wasting it, but there are so many who need it. It's clear that there is a lot of room for improvement and that's where we come in. We you with getting involved and making an impact . This will not only help the planet, but also save you money! Who doesn't want that? Explore this site for helpful tips to becoming a water warrior!

Impact
It may seem like we have plenty of water here in the US, especially in Colorado, but there are actually 844 million people that don't have access to clean water. In addition, over 30% of the Earths water sources are over-tapped and over allocated. Organizations such as The Nature Conservancy, incorporate systems to help aid the issue of this diminishing, and most essential resource. According to their website, only 5% of natural lands all around the globe that are at high development risk are actually protected. This puts a lot of land and water at risk. The following are some helpful tips that you can start implementing at home to conserve water, and help our planet!

Your Toilet
According to Colorado State University, by simply switching your toilet you can save up to 6.4 gallons of water per flush. A family of four can save up to 25,000 gallons of water per year by just switching to high-efficiency toilets, usually manufactured after 1993. Some other easy things you can do to save water used by your toilet are

-
Regularly check to make sure your toilet is not leaking, you can do this by putting food coloring in your toilet tank and seeing if it leaks into the bowl without flushing
-
Check that the flapper is working properly
-
Flush only if you really need to
-
Don't use your toilet as a trash can
-
Don't use toilet cleaner tablets with harsh chemicals. These can damage the rubber and plastic parts of your toilets and cause leaks
Your Shower Head
US shower heads currently have a flow rate of up to 2.5 gallons per minute, so making sure you have one of these, or one that allows less is a great start. Here are some other useful tips:
-
Make sure to keep your showers brief, under 5 minutes if possible
-
Turn the water off when lathering up soap and shampoo
-
Collect the water from the shower head in a bucket while you're waiting for the shower to heat up, use it to water your plants!
-
Make sure to check for leaks and fix repairs ASAP
